Spring 1 2024
Happy New Year to you all. We hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year with your families.
This term is another exciting term of learning and fun. Our main focus this half term will be History and learning all about Florence Nightingale. We will be finding out about who she is and the amazing work she did to change conditions for the better in hospitals.
As Scientists, we will be finding out all about our bodies, naming and labelling the main parts of our bodies. We will also be carrying out simple investigations using all of our 6 senses.
As Writers, we will be writing from Florence Nightingale's point of view and writing letters and diary entries to describe the awful conditions and how this made her feel. We will also be retelling one of our favourite stories, Funnybones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.
As Readers, we will be continuing to learn our phonic sounds in Year 1 and use these to develop reading with fluency and accuracy. In Year 2 our focus will be on reading for comprehension, focusing on how to retrieve information from what we have read.
As Mathematicians, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of Place Value, addition and subtraction. We will also be looking at Money, Length and Weight and Shape.
We look forward to sharing our work with you through photographs on the website and on Dojo.

Phonics in KS1
Phonics is taught in mixed ability classes following the Little Wandle programme of teaching. There are five lessons per week and levelled phonics reading books will be sent home using Big Cat Collins books.
At the end of Year 1, children will be assessed on their phonics knowledge, through the ‘phonics check’. If any Year 2s who did not pass the check when they were in year 1, they get the opportunity to retake the test. Please see the below link for some more guidance in regard to the phonics screening check.
If you have any questions about this please come in and talk to us, more information will be sent out as we approach the phonics check.
