Holly Grove Primary Academy

Personal, Social & Health Education

What is PSHE?

At Holly Grove Primary Academy, we believe that PSHE and RSHE equip our children with the understanding, knowledge and skills they will need to succeed and thrive. Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) is a non-statutory subject in which pupils are taught skills and subject knowledge which will help to support them in their own lives, relationships and communities. Relationships and Health Education is a statutory component of the curriculum in Primary Schools from September 2020. Relationships Education involves learning about many strands including: family relationships; friendships and relationships with peers and adults; healthy and unhealthy relationships; staying safe; the characteristics of positive relationships; relationships online and the emotional, social and physical aspects of growing up. Health Education covers healthy lifestyles, first aid, mental health, hygiene and puberty.

Teaching about relationships enables our pupils to safely negotiate making new friendships; recognise potential threats to their wellbeing and personal safety; develop meaningful relationships with others throughout their lives; and know how to keep themselves safe and healthy. We also believe that a complete PSHE and RSHE curriculum is important, despite these not being a statutory requirement, to ensure that pupils have a well-rounded and rich curriculum covering a range of life skills as well as financial education and social education, learning about being part of a community and about social issues which affect their local area, nation and the whole world.

Aims

The purpose of the PSHE curriculum is to provide all pupils with opportunities to:

  • Develop confidence and responsibility and make the most of their abilities
  • Prepare to play an active role as citizens through developing skills for living and valuing themselves and respecting others
  • Develop a healthy lifestyle
  • Contribute to their community and the wider world and becoming morally and socially responsible
  • Develop good relationships and respect the differences between people

What our children say about PSHE

Intent

Our PSHE curriculum aims to develop children's life long learning skills, ensuring they build awareness, understanding and knowledge as they become citizens of the future. Please click here to see our PSHE intent.

PSHE Intent

Implementation

The document below shows a planned teaching sequence that a unit of PSHE lessons may follow in order to promote the sequential and progressive development of knowledge which can be securely demonstrated by our pupils.

Our PSHE Curriculum

To ensure children are taught and remember the appropriate knowledge and skills relating to PSHRE, we have created a whole school progressive breakdown of the National Curriculum expectations, this draws on the skills and knowledge being taught across all subject areas and hopes to contribute to the development of key concepts and themes in a deep and connected way.

School Council

Our New School Council Has Been Elected!

We are delighted to announce that our School Pupil Council for this year has now been officially elected! Children from Year 1 all the way up to Year 6 took part, making this a truly whole‑school democratic event.

Over the past week, pupils who wished to stand as candidates prepared thoughtful speeches and presented them to their year groups. They spoke confidently about the changes they would like to make, the ideas they could bring, and how they would represent their classmates. It was wonderful to see how much time, care and ambition the children put into their speeches.

Their peers demonstrated our Torch Values brilliantly by listening respectfully, valuing each other’s opinions, and showing support for every candidate. Although we would have loved to choose everyone, the children understood that each pupil had one vote — just like in real elections — and they were encouraged to choose the person they felt would represent them best.

To make the experience meaningful, we used voting slips and ballot boxes and talked about British Values and the democratic process in our country, including how MPs and officials are elected. The children showed great maturity in discussing fairness, representation, and making informed choices.

After counting the votes, the candidates with the most support were elected as this year’s School Council representatives. We are incredibly proud of every child who took part — whether they stood as a candidate or participated by voting. You all helped make this a fantastic learning experience.

Congratulations to our newly elected councillors! We are excited to see the positive ideas, changes, and leadership you will bring to our school this year.

Year 6 Police Cadets

Year 6 had an amazing experience with Deryn who came into school for Police Cadets. She explained what her job entails and even discussed some of the jobs she has been on, they sounded very exciting and quite scary at times! On one of our sessions, we looked at the phonetic alphabet. It was really confusing at first, but Deryn made it fun. We had to think of a 5 letter word and then using police radios we spelt it out using the phonetic alphabet, there were some strange spellings. We then played bingo using the alphabet but by this time we were experts. On another session Deryn bought in items that are used during a forensic investigation. We asked lots of interesting questions that Deryn was able to answer as honest as she could. She even bought in a full forensic suit which a couple of people were able to wear. Deryn then explained how fingerprints work and we were able to take our own using ink pads, it was very messy.

All year 6 thoroughly enjoyed the police cadet sessions and we even had a few children decide on their future careers.
