Year 5/6 Begin Their Art Topic with War Artist Paul Nash

Year 5/6 have launched their new Art topic this week by delving into the powerful and atmospheric work of Paul Nash, one of Britain’s most influential war artists. Their first lesson set a brilliant tone for the term ahead!

The children began with a critical study of Nash’s artwork, exploring how he used shape, colour, line and composition to capture the devastation and emotion of war-torn landscapes. They shared thoughtful interpretations, discussed mood and symbolism, and considered the messages Nash communicated through his haunting scenes. Their maturity and insight were fantastic to see.

💻 Researching Like Real Art Historians

To deepen their understanding, the children used Chromebooks to research Paul Nash’s life, influences and most famous pieces. They investigated key biographical facts, looked closely at different paintings, and gathered information to support their critical evaluations. Their digital research skills were excellent, and they demonstrated great independence as they navigated trusted online sources.

This strong start has really sparked the children’s curiosity and has given them a solid foundation for developing their own artistic responses later in the topic. We can’t wait to see how their ideas evolve!

Well done, Year 5/6 — a thoughtful and impressive start to your new Art journey!
