Year 3/4 Step Back in Time for a Roman and Celt History Workshop
Year 3/4 Step Back in Time for a Roman and Celt History Workshop
Our Year 3 and 4 pupils enjoyed an unforgettable journey into the Iron Age this week as the school hall was transformed into a remarkable Celtic settlement! From the moment the children arrived, they were immersed in the world of the ancient Celts, surrounded by huts, artefacts and the bustling atmosphere of tribal life.
To begin their adventure, the children were welcomed into two Celtic tribes: the Dubunni and the Ordovices. Each tribe worked together to establish their identity, learn about Celtic customs, and even begin negotiating a marriage alliance to unite their people—just as real Celtic tribes might have done many centuries ago. The discussions were lively, strategic, and full of teamwork as pupils explored how alliances helped tribes survive and thrive.
The excitement didn’t stop there! During their time on the playground, the Celts were confronted by an unexpected visitor—a Roman soldier. Instead of shying away, the children rose to the challenge with brilliant Celtic chants and fearless unity. Their performance was so powerful that the Roman officer turned and ran… leaving behind his pilum(spear), which the triumphant Celts quickly claimed as a trophy!
The workshop has truly brought history to life, giving children the chance to explore the past through drama, play, and hands‑on experiences. Pupils are now full of facts, stories, and enthusiasm about Roman Britain and the Celtic way of life.
A huge thank you to everyone involved for making this a day the children will remember for years to come.
