Reception Begin Exploring Patterns in Maths!
This week in Reception, the children have started their brand‑new maths focus: patterns — and what an exciting start it has been!
To begin, the children explored different types of patterns all around them. Together, they looked closely at patterns such as:
- Spotty
- Stripy
- Zig‑zag
- Check
The children loved spotting the differences between each pattern and talking about the shapes, colours and lines they could see.
🧣🧤 Matching Winter Clothes
For their first practical activity, the children were challenged to find matching hats, scarves and gloves. They looked carefully to see which items had the same pattern and proudly named what they had found:
- “This one is stripy!”
- “These two match — they’re zig‑zag!”
It was wonderful to see the children using their mathematical vocabulary and working carefully to make accurate matches.
🔄 Looking Ahead…
The children are already excited for next week when they will begin creating their very own ABAB repeating patterns. We can’t wait to see the colourful and creative ideas they come up with!
Well done, Reception — what fantastic pattern detectives you are!
