A Magical Start to Our Winter Wonderland Topic! ✨❄️

What a wonderful way to begin our brand‑new topic, Winter Wonderland! This morning, the playground transformed into a sparkling snowy adventure — and the children made the very most of it!

As soon as we stepped outside, excitement filled the air. We had snow angels, we had snow jumps, we had snow slides… and yes, we even had a few cheeky snowballs thrown at the teachers! (All in good fun, of course! ❄️😉)

The children worked together to create their very own snow jump and slide, and we were so impressed with how adventurous many of them were — launching themselves into snowy landings with huge smiles and heaps of bravery.

Then came the highlight of the morning… the sledge!
Every child waited so patiently for their turn, cheering each other on and showing wonderful teamwork and kindness. Their enthusiasm, courage, and big Winter Wonderland grins made us incredibly proud.

We had snow much fun (pun absolutely intended!) and can’t wait to see where our Winter Wonderland learning journey takes us next. ❄️☃️✨

🌟 Linking to Our EYFS Learning Goals

This snowy morning was not just magical — it was meaningful learning across many areas of the EYFS:

🏃‍♂️ Physical Education (PE)

Children developed gross motor skills through climbing, jumping, sliding, running and balancing in the snow.
They also built core strength, coordination and spatial awareness while navigating the snowy terrain.

💬 PSHE (Personal, Social & Emotional Development)

Turn‑taking on the sledge, encouraging friends, and working together to build snow structures helped children practise:

  • Teamwork
  • Patience
  • Confidence
  • Managing feelings and excitement in a busy outdoor environment

🌲 Outdoor Learning & Forest School

Being out in natural weather conditions supports resilience and independence.
The children explored textures, temperatures, risk‑taking and problem‑solving — all key elements of Forest School philosophy.

🔬 Science

These sessions naturally led to lots of scientific thinking, including:

  • What happens to snow when we touch it?
  • Why is ice slippery?
  • How does snow change when compressed?
Children were observing, predicting and experimenting with real materials.

🌍 Geography

Children explored and talked about seasonal weather, how winter affects the world around them, and how snow forms.
They also used geographical language such as cold, freeze, melt, slippery, icy, and frosty.
