Woodland Stories

As a follow up to our trip to the woods the children have made up some stories set in the woods. Please read our enchanting little tales. You will find themes which are important to the authors such as, friendship, being kind and working together. Their worries are also apparent: floods, getting stuck, storms and someone eating all the party food!

The children created their stories using a story box technique championed by Alan Peat. They used instruments and puppets to perform their story.

BAT TO THE RESCUE - By Joshua, Zoe, George, Heidi, Chloe and Michael

Bat To The Rescue

One rainy afternoon Badger, Squirrel, Bat and Hedgehog were playing in the woods. It was autumn and all the leaves were falling off the trees.
The rain became very heavy and everything began to flood. The drains filled up. All of a sudden a big gush of water came and washed the animals away.
"Help!" shouted the animals.
They were very scared.
Bat, who was flying because he could, heard his friends shout and said, "Bat to the rescue!" He soared down and picked up his friends one by one. He carried them to the mountain where they were safe and dry.
"Thank you" said Badger.
"Thank you" said Squirrel.
"Thank you" said Hedgehog.
"No problem" said Bat.
The next day was sunny. The animals were happy.

"I don't want to play" he said, "go away!"
He pushed Squirrel which made Squirrel very sad. He started to cry. He climbed down the tree and his friends Mole and Bat asked "Are you O.K.?"
"No," said squirrel. "Bird is not my friend."
Mole went to see Bird.
"Don't hurt Squirrel anymore. Come and play in the leaves with us!" said Mole.
"But I think you need to say sorry first" said Bat.
Bird said sorry. Squirrel forgave him and the animals played football with a conker all day.

Just then Squirrel came by.
"Would you like to stay to tea?" asked Badger.
"Yes please," said Squirrel.
Luckily Squirrel had some food suitable for all the friends. They had a lovely tea and soon after became very tired, so they all went home to sleep.

GREEDY BAT - By Tiffany, Antonia, Oliver, James, Tegan, Hannah, Morgan and Amy

Greedy Bat

One sunny day a hedgehog, a bat, a squirrel and a bat were all collecting food in the woods. They worked hard all day, rustling in the leaves, picking up mushrooms and collecting conkers.
They were all very hungry but they knew that they needed to save the food for their dinner. They were going to have a big party and eat all the yummy food. But bat was too hungry to wait. He gobbled up all the food in one go!
When the other animals found out what bat had done they were sad and cross. They told off Bat.
The wise old owl heard the shouting and flew down to see what was wrong. Owl agreed that Bat had been naughty.
"But you friends should be kind and all work together to collect more food," he said.
So they all worked hard. Squirrel and Bat collected conkers from the tree. Badger and Hedgehog picked some more mushrooms. They took it into a big hole in the ground.
In the winter they had a big party and they were very happy!
