Welcome to Mrs Barnes' Class Page!

Welcome to Year 5/6!

On this page, you will find useful information about the Year 5/6 curriculum, expectations, homework and key dates throughout the year so keep checking back regularly.

Holly Grove Primary is an Eco School therefore we are looking at ways to reduce our paper trail so you will find letters, copies of homework and extra support sheets added to this page rather than sending out a hard copy. If you wish for a copy of a document, please do not hesitate to contact the office or me who will be more than happy to assist you.

If you wish to discuss anything with me, I would be more than happy to meet with you therefore write a message in your child's reading diary or contact the school office.

Year 5/6 Timetable

Here you will find my class timetable for 2017-2018 and the Circus Timetable.

Reading

It is really important for your child to practise reading as much as possible in order to consolidate their learning in school and to help them to broaden their vocabulary skills, general knowledge and imagination.

While we practise reading in school as much as possible, each child is expected to read to an adult/older sibling at home at least 5 times per week. This needs to be dated and signed by the adult/older sibling who hears them to read in their reading diary. Please comment if your child is; enjoying the book, found some words challenging or used good expression or tone when reading aloud. It is important your child has their reading diary and reading book in school every day.

To help prepare your child to understand the world around them, please encourage them to read appropriate newspapers articles, comics, poems, leaflets and a wide range of fiction genres. Please let me know if you would like some suggestions.

Below I have attached a recommended book list for Year 5/6 children.

As well as listening to your child read aloud to progress in fluency and expression, it is vital to check their understanding of the text, vocabulary, structure and technical features to allow them to prepare for the demanding Key Stage 2 tests. Below I have attached a document with a range of appropriate Year 5/6 questions which can be easily adapted to the book they are reading. Please comment in their reading diary if your child is understanding a particular set of questions really well or struggling on a certain aspect.

Read Theory

In addition to reading at home to an adult, your child has been given an account for Read Theory where they will read short passages matched to their reading level, via a pre-assessment in school.

Your child will have come home with a letter with their unique username and password: ilovereading1.

Children can access Read Theory at home, at school, and even on the go using mobile devices. All you need is an internet connection. Your child has the freedom to do as much as they would like using this programme and I will inform you of any homework set using the programme via a text.

Please inform me via Reading Diary if your child has used Read Theory instead of reading to an adult that day.

Library

Your child will have the opportunity to change their library book every two weeks.

Spellings

On the document below, you will find the spellings overview for this half term for Year 5 and 6.

PE

Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school for Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays and that all kit is clearly labelled with their name.

PE Kit

  • A plain white t-shirt or with the school logo
  • Black or green plain shorts
  • Tracksuits or jogging bottoms – black or green
  • Trainers which supports the foot and ankle.
  • Earrings – only studs – children need to be able to take out earrings for PE lessons.
  • No bright coloured tracksuits or hoodies.

My class will be swimming in Autumn 2 and Summer 1 on Mondays instead of PE.

If your child is unable to participate in PE for any reason, please send a note or message to me on the day.

Year 6 Maths Homework

Year 6 Maths Homework will be given out on a Friday and will need to be handed in on the following Wednesday. All homework will be revision of the learning objectives taught in class that week.
