Art

At Holly Grove we aim to maximise the opportunities for every child to succeed, by providing a rich and varied curriculum, that enhances pupil enjoyment and engagement and promotes independence and curiosity.

What is Art?

We believe that art is central to a well- rounded education. Art is carefully integrated into topics in order to enhance children’s enjoyment and enrich the topic.

Children should also have the opportunity to experiment and create within the Art curriculum. This helps to raise self- esteem and allows children the opportunity to express individual feelings and ideas.

Children should have the opportunity to develop particular skills and knowledge across the six aspects of Art and study the work of well- known artists, to include the body of work of famous artists from the past and present.

Aims

The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
  • become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
  • evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
  • know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Intent

Our Art curriculum aims to develop children's experiences of Art, imagining, creating and exploring through different mediums. Please click the link below to see our curriculum intent.

Implementation

The document below shows a planned teaching sequence that a unit of Art lessons may follow in order to promote the sequential and progressive development of knowledge.

Please note: the order of the pathway may be different but all elements will still be covered.

The document below identifies the key elements which we believe are important to incorporate into our Art lessons in order for them to build on previously taught knowledge and also to deepen and secure key concepts.

Please note: The order of the pathway may be different but all elements will still be covered.

Our Curriculum

To ensure children are taught and remember the appropriate knowledge and skills  relating to Art we have created a whole school  progressive breakdown of the national curriculum expectations. This draws on the skills and knowledge being taught across all subject areas.

Whole School Two Year Cycle

Year 1 and 2 - Sparks & Flames

Y1 and 2 have linked their Art (Sparks and Flames) to their topic on ‘The Great Fire of London’.

Y1 have been making flames out of tissue paper. They have been cutting, tearing and layering to make their fiery creations. Y2 have used chalks to create an image of The Great Fire of London.

Year 5 and 6 - 3D Pop Art

Year 5 and 6 have created some beautiful 3D Pop Art Cityscapes in the style of Charles Fizzano.

The children had to draw and build up their pictures focusing on 3D layering.

Art in EYFS

Nursery have been focusing on colour and beginning to colour mix. The children are now moving on to using textures.

In Reception, this term the children have completed their first observational drawing of popcorn the rabbit. Children will continue to build on their drawing skills with spring observational drawings.
